As humans we perceive an illusion of separateness. We are divided by a series of membranes – time, space, air, water, land, skin – but at the atomic level, we exist in constant entropy, eventually enfolding into one celestial body called Earth. All elements of our corporeal bodies, all possessions, and all societies will eventually be restructured. Even in our religious and spiritual texts, we share traces of ourselves through syncretic stories and symbolism, translated across time and space through spoken and written word. I am interested in the evolution of our collective consciousness, as demonstrated by the poems, gospels, hymns, and fables handed down throughout human history.

In Praise of the Sacred is an exploration of connectedness, inspired by my research on religious syncretism, folklore, and sacred poetry, along with my experience in communion with nature. In this preliminary meditation on the sacred, I have incorporated text and imagery from my research as well as intuitive material processes that correspond with observed patterns in organic structures found throughout nature and the body.

LILY MUELLER

I make large scale quilted installations that are influenced by architecture, optical illusion, color, psychedelia and music. I grew up in a house influenced by 60’s and 70’s visual and music culture. My father is an architect and I grew up watching him remodel and paint the interior of our house unusually bright colors. The way he remodeled interiors, inspired me to think about space in whatever way I wanted. In my quilts, I am able to create imagined spaces and make them a reality, not only for myself but also for the viewer.

I build abstract compositions through piecing together brightly colored fabrics to resemble architectural spaces. My process starts by establishing a contrasting and loud color palette. After finalizing my color choices, I start hand dyeing fabrics that create visual vibration. I have found that dyeing my own colors kicks off the excitement of starting a new project. After the fabric is dyed I place the pieces according to my vision. Once I have a composition pieced, it undergoes the process of quilting. The work transforms into a quilt by sewing together three layers of fabric. The top piecing, quilt batting and back piecing. This brings an extra element of line work to the composition.
