current spotlight: rug doppelgängers.
If you’ve ever shopped online you’ve probably shopped around to find the best price. Along the way you’ve probably noticed that you find the same item over and over, but slightly different. Call them look-alikes, doppelgangers, dupes, shared inspiration, or just an overdone trend - no matter what the item is, chances are you can find something similar in various price ranges. The same is certainly true for rugs and home decor - but like with other products, you have to be careful about trusting internet knockoffs. That hand knotted wool rug that looks too good to be true probably is - don’t be fooled by cheap prices and great pictures! That also doesn’t mean you have to forego the style you want because you can’t find it in your price range - chances are there is an acceptable rug in the style you love… you just have to know where to look!
Here at BEACON we eagerly await new catalogs from our favorite mills so we can scour them and find the absolute best designs and newest trends. This means we see a lot of stuff that looks similar from brand to brand - but even though the styles may be similar, there is a wide range of prices, sizes, fibers, and construction - meaning you have a large pool of options to choose from! Over the years we’ve found ourselves saying things like: “hey, this rug looks a lot like that hand knotted wool masterpiece I love but could never afford!” or, “I’ve always loved the style of this outdoor rug, and now there is something similar in a cozier fiber that I can put in my bedroom!” or “this abstract rug is everything I want in a rug, but it has pink… this other collection has the colors I want - without the pink!” etc.
That brings us to this month’s SPOTLIGHT topic: rug doppelgangers! It’s not always about cost, sometimes being able to find something similar to a rug you love that isn’t quite right - size, shape, color, or fiber - can help you find the rug you didn’t know you were missing. And of course, price can be an important factor too!

Welcome back to another SPOTLIGHT on area rugs! The past two series have been a lot of fun and we hope you’ve enjoyed it as much as we have. Something we noticed throughout our first two series was how frequently the topic of color comes up. You may be thinking “well duh, color and area rugs kind of go hand in hand” and you’d be right. You really can’t talk about area rugs without considering color. For this SPOTLIGHT topic we want to look specifically at bold and bright colored rug options.
Interested in bringing more bright color into your space? Not only are bold, colorful rugs a hot trend, they’re statement pieces that can easily overwhelm your space or YOU if not done carefully, but don’t be afraid of bringing color into your home - you absolutely should!
We are talking about C-O-L-O-R, so ditch the greys and neutrals and let’s look at some dazzling colorful area rugs!

DEFINING SPACES: USING AREA RUGS TO SEPARATE A ROOM FOR MULTIPURPOSE USe
If 2020 taught us anything, it was that our home is our sanctuary. As more and more people found their homes transforming into a workspace, school, cafeteria, gym, and safe haven from the chaos of life, we learned the importance of making the most of the space we have.
Something we’ve heard a lot was “how do I create a functional office space when I don’t have a spare bedroom to use?” The answer? You guessed it… area rugs! To be fair, a rug alone won’t solve all your problems, but it is a very simple way to create definition and boundaries within a larger space. Once we have our spaces defined, it is as simple as using furniture thoughtfully to divide our space, adding a screen or curtain, or even just allowing one area to flow into the next. This week we are talking about defining spaces. It isn’t just home offices, either. Play areas, reading nooks, workout spaces, dining areas, entertainment spaces and even just your normal living areas are all definable spaces we can carve out of larger rooms by using the right area rug and furniture placement.
In this two-week long series on defining spaces, we got really into the idea of making the most of your space – covering topics such as defining specific areas to create separation between functional zones, designing to maximize small spaces, zoning areas to divide open floorplans, using multiple rugs in one room, how to mix rug and design styles, as well as unexpected rug placements and pairs.

taking it outside: indoor/outdoor rugs
This week, we headed outdoors. As our first official blog entry, we felt it was important to talk about something relevant - and what could be more relevant than indoor outdoor rugs right now? The weather is warming up and we are all feeling the pull to step outside and soak up the sunshine!
As we move to our porches and decks - either to relax with a cold beverage or flip burgers on the grill or lounge poolside - we find ourselves wanting to create more comfortable spaces to spend our time in. In the past, outdoor area rugs didn’t really provide a lot of variety. Cheesy motifs and bright colors with little variation left a lot to be desired. Luckily, the rug industry has come a long way in the past several years and today’s offering of indoor outdoor rugs means you do not have to sacrifice taste in order to get a rug that will withstand unpredictable weather changes, wash clean, and resist sun fading. The best part is, the indoor outdoor rugs of today are every bit as comfortable as they are stylish.
If you’ve ever lived in a house or apartment with any decent sized deck or patio, you’ve probably found yourself looking at indoor/outdoor rugs - maybe you picked one up from a big box store or even bought one offline, but chances are you felt like they all looked and felt the same, so much to the point that you settled for whatever seemed the cheapest just to get the job done… Are we close? That had always been our experience - until BEACON! These past few years we’ve had the opportunity to get up close and personal with some indoor/outdoor rugs that really push the limits of what we’ve always seen in outdoor options. From funky motifs and trendy color palettes to varying pile heights and textures, outdoor rugs can be just as fun and inviting as rugs we feature inside our homes!
